Type 2 diabetes is a chronic ailment that influences the way your body processes glucose. Glucose is a simpler form of sugar. This disease affects around 27 million people in the United States of America alone. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes in existence.

If you have type two diabetes what it basically means is that either

  1. Your body is not producing enough insulin to manage a healthy level of blood sugar or
  2. Your body is fighting the effects of insulin

Insulin is the hormone that manages the movement of your cells. There used to be a misconception that it is a condition that affects only adults but lately it has been found that a lot of children are getting diagnosed with the disorder too. An explanation of this may be the rise in childhood obesity.

What causes type 2 diabetes?

Why type 2 diabetes occurs is still largely unknown. However medical professionals do know that for large part genetics, obesity, and an inactive lifestyle are responsible for type two diabetes. Though why exactly does the body suddenly stop producing insulin or why does it stop resisting its effects is still unknown. Aforementioned are only contributory factors.

Insulin and its functions

The pancreas is a gland located behind and under the stomach. They produce a hormone known as insulin. Insulin is responsible for maintaining the blood sugar in our body. The pancreas secretes insulin into our blood. Insulin circulates in the body helping the sugar to enter our cells. It reduces the amount of sugar in our bloodstream. The amount of insulin secreted from your pancreas is affected by the amount of drop in your blood sugar levels. When you have diabetes the sugar refuses to enter your cells for some reason and remains in your bloodstream causing a high blood sugar.

What does glucose do?

Glucose is the type of simple sugar that is the main source of energy for the cells that makes up muscles and other tissues.

  • Food and our own liver are two major sources of glucose.
  • Once it is absorbed into the bloodstream it enters the cells with the help of insulin.
  • Our liver both collects and produces glucose.
  • When you have not eaten properly or have not eaten at all for a while your liver breaks down your stored glycogen into glucose to keep your blood sugar levels normal.

In type 2 diabetes when your blood sugar level increases because it does not enter your cells and starts to build up in your bloodstream your pancreas produce more and more insulin until they cannot anymore. This happens because the insulin-producing beta cells become impaired in the process.

This is drastically different from type 1 diabetes where the body destroys the beta cells altogether due to a mistake. This leaves very little insulin in the body.

Who might be at risk of having type 2 diabetes?

  • If you are overweight. It is important to know what overweight means in this context. You aren’t overweight because you are a few pounds heavier than what you would like to weigh. Overweight here strictly means being severely overweight to a point where your body’s fat percentage is dangerously overboard.
  • Fat distribution is also relevant. If your body stores fat in your abdomen more than it does in other areas then you might be at risk for diabetes. You are at risk for diabetes if you are a man whose waist size is over 40 inches or a woman whose waist size is over 35 inches.
  • If you are inactive that may increase your risk of type 2 diabetes as well. Exercise or physical activity of any kind makes your body use up the glucose and makes your cells more sensitive to insulin. Hence reducing your risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • If you are older than 45 you are at a higher of having the disease
  • If you have a close relative who has type 2 diabetes you might be at a higher risk for having the disease.
  • If your blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes you’re at risk too.
  • If you have PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome you are also at risk of having diabetes.
  • If you developed a gestational disease during your pregnancy you to have a higher risk of having type 2 diabetes.

How to prevent type 2 diabetes?

Be active:

The First step in trying to avoid diabetes is forcing your body to burn glucose so that your blood sugar remains low and your cells become more sensitive to insulin. This will help you even though you already have type 2 diabetes. If you have a job that requires you to sit for long periods of time then try to get up and move around every thirty minutes or so, take a walk every day, or even better go running.

Eat Healthier

Eating healthy is the key to avoiding diabetes and maintaining good health if you already have type two diabetes. Eat food items that are low in fat and calories. Include more whole food and fruits in your diet.

Avoid being inactive for long periods of time

One of the biggest risk factors of type 2 diabetes is not moving around enough. Make sure you get some physical activity every 30 to 40 minutes.

Lose weight

If you are dangerously overweight then losing five to ten percent of your weight can be extremely effective in reducing your risk for diabetes. Losing weight is also good for your heart.
